Present Day
The society is now known as the Nisyrian Society Of New York. We are continuing efforts to help the island in any way possible while spreading years of cultural traditions around New York and America in general.
The Gnomagoras Nisyrian Society was formed on April 5, 1915 through the merging of two Nisyrian societies, OMIROS and PORFYRIS. OMIROS built the first public school on the island, while PORFYRIS constructed the aristocratic building of LOUTRA. The two societies helped NISYROS during difficult times, including the Balkan war and other crises. However, the Nisyrians were unhappy with the division and worked hard to merge the two societies. Finally, on April 5, 1915, the two societies were merged into one and named the Gnomagoras Nisyrian Society after an ancient Nisyrian admiral who fought various battles during the 3rd century BC. The society played a crucial role in helping the island and its people including, paying doctors and sending medicine, supporting education, creating scholarships, aiding refugees in 1922, and rebuilding homes after an earthquake in 1933. The society also keeps Nisyrian customs and culture alive in America by celebrating special events and bringing the community together.
